ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's top court ordered the arrest of the prime minister in a corruption case on Tuesday, Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything the latest clash between the government and a judiciary that has repeatedly pressured the country's political leaders Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

The ruling is sure to inflame the already antagonistic relationship between the court and the government, pushing the country toward yet another political crisis. It also could provide ammunition to Tahir-ul-Qadri, a firebrand Muslim cleric who was leading tens of thousands of people in a second day of rallies in Islamabad to press for the removal of the government, which he criticized as corrupt and indifferent to the common man Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

The Supreme Court order against Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf was related to a case involving private power stations set up to provide electricity to energy-starved Pakistan. The judges are investigating allegations that the bidding process was marred by corruption Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ordered the arrest of 16 people involved in the case, including Ashraf, who previously served as minister for water and power, said the written court order Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

An adviser to the prime minister, Fawad Chaudhry, said any attempt to arrest the prime minister would be unconstitutional since he enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office.

"We consider it a judicial coup, and it is part of a greater plan to derail democracy," Chaudhry said prize bond schedule.

The Supreme Court clashed repeatedly with the government over the last year, especially over an old corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari in Swiss courts. Pakistan's top court convicted Ashraf's predecessor, Yousuf Raza Gilani, of contempt of court for refusing to reopen the case and ousted him from office Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

The judges pressured Ashraf as well, and the government finally agreed to the court's demand to ask the Swiss to pursue the case _ which Swiss authorities have said privately they have no intention of doing because Zardari enjoys immunity while in office prize bond schedule.

It was unclear whether there was any connection between the Supreme Court's order and Qadri's rally. But some speculated it was a scripted one-two blow by the chief justice and the cleric to strike at their opponents in the government Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

Qadri has seized on alleged corruption by Pakistani politicians to rally support for his protest against the government. The cleric rocketed to national prominence after his return from Canada late last year, and his message has prize bond schedule galvanized many Pakistanis who say the government has brought them only miseryWatch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

But critics fear that Qadri and his demands for election reforms may derail the country's upcoming democratic elections, possibly at the behest of the country's powerful military _ allegations denied by the cleric Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

Those concerns could intensify following a fiery speech he delivered to protesters Tuesday in which he condemned the country's prize bond pakistan schedule politicians as corrupt thieves and lavished praise on both the Supreme Court and the military, which has a history of toppling civilian governments in coups prize bond schedule.

He said there are only two institutions in Pakistan that "are functioning and performing their duties to fulfill the needs of the people Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything."

"One is the judiciary of Pakistan, and one is the armed forces of Pakistan, and nothing else," Qadri said.

The 61-year-old cleric spoke from inside a bulletproof vehicle parked several hundred meters (yards) from parliament, facing hundreds of police in riot gear who formed a human barrier against at least 30,000 prize bond result schedule demonstrators packed into the main avenue running through Islamabad. Many waved green and white Pakistani flags and cheered as Qadri spoke.

The determination of the marchers and organizers has thrust them into direct confrontation with the government, which has strongly opposed the rally Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

The protest has been largely peaceful ever since demonstrators set off from Lahore on Sunday, but the underlying tension prize bond schedule was evident early on Tuesday morning when police and protesters clashed hours after Qadri arrived in Islamabad and addressed his supporters. Demonstrators threw rocks at a vehicle, while others held up bullet casings and an empty tear gas canister.

Qadri called on his supporters to stay in the streets until the national and provincial governments were dissolved, prize bond guess papers schedule saying lawmakers were focused on lining their own pockets rather than addressing the problems of common citizens Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

"The lawmakers are the law breakers," Qadri said.

Many supporters have pledged to remain in Islamabad for as long as Qadri demands. They brought blankets to ward off the cold, prize bond schedule and many slept in the street Monday night.

Qadri maintained that his movement was not anti-democratic, but he criticized the current political system as broken. Many of his recommendations to fix it, such as rooting out corruption and incompetence, seem more aspirational than grounded in specific details. He has issued numerous vague demands, such as vetting political candidates to make sure they're honest and restructuring the prize bond schedule system so that the common people have more opportunity to take part in politics Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

His anti-government barbs have hit home with many Pakistanis. Five years after Pakistan's return to democracy from military rule, many are furious at the power outages, terror attacks and unemployment that continue to plague them.

"This system has rotted. It has to change," said 29-year-old Iftikhar Ahmad, who traveled to Islamabad from the central city of Sargodha. "I am going to stay here ... even if I die."

Many protesters like Saqib Sultan, from the eastern city of Lahore, brought their families and slept on the road.

"My wife is here with me, my children are here, and I am here," he said. Like many others, he vowed to stay until their demands are met and called this "the last chance to save Pakistan."

One city official put the number of protesters at roughly 30,000. He did not want to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

Some of Qadri's reform proposals have sparked concern that the cleric is being used as a front for the Pakistani military to derail the upcoming vote, just as the country prepares for its first transfer of power from one civilian government to another.

Qadri has called for a military role in picking the caretaker government that will take over temporarily ahead of elections, and has said it could stay in place longer than normal to enact necessary reforms Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

Qadri's apparent rise to a national political force in a matter of weeks since his return from Canada have also raised questions about whether he's been getting outside funding.

The government has painted Qadri as a menace to the country's fragile democracy. Chaudhry, the prime minister's adviser, said Qadri's demands are a revolt against the state.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh warned Pakistan on Tuesday that there "cannot be business as usual" after last week's barbaric beheading of an Indian soldier along the line of control by Pakistani army commandos.

The incident has triggered a heavy exchange of fire between the two armies ranged against each other along the volatile unresolved boundary Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

"It cannot be business as usual with Pakistan after the heinous act. Those who are responsible will have to be brought to book... I hope Pakistan realizes this. The government's point of view has been communicated in detail by the defence minister (A K Antony), foreign minister (Salman Khurshid) and the Army chief (General Bikram Singh)," said the PM, talking to reporters at the Army Day reception Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

External affairs minister Salman Khurshid said, "We are pressing very hard on Pakistan to bring the perpetrators (of the beheading) to book. We are not happy with the outcome of the flag meeting (held at the Chakkan-Da-Bagh crossing in Poonch district of J&K) on Monday but the process is on. We should not take final definitive positions on anything but the processes will obviously get affected since what has happened is barbaric and unpardonable Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything."

The hardening of India's position vis-a-vis Pakistan comes just a day after Gen Bikram Singh said he had instructed all his battalion commanders on the volatile line of control to retaliate with all their might if the Pakistan army provokes them by violating the ceasefire or pushing militants into J&K.

The Indian Army is quite clear that it "reserves the right to retaliate at a time and place of its choosing". This ominous warning was conveyed, in as many words, to Pakistan during the brigadier-level flag meeting at the Chakkan-Da-Bagh on Monday afternoon. But Pakistan rejected "all allegations" made by India, in what turned out to be a mere trading of accusations by the two sides Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday put on hold the operationalisation of visa-on-arrival for senior citizens of Pakistan amid mounting tension on the Line of Control(LoC).

Government sources said the decision was taken after several agencies sought clarifications on facilities to be offered to the Pakistani citizens though the continued tension along the LoC following killing of two soldiers by Pakistani troops could be the apparent reason.

The visa-on-arrival facility for Pakistani nationals above 65 years was supposed to start on Tuesday at the Attari integrated check post (ICP) under the new visa agreement between India and Pakistan signed in September 2012 to ease cross-border travel as part of confidence-building measures(CBM) Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading Anything.

Some clauses of the relaxed visa regime like multiple-entry and reporting-free visas for businessmen and allowing them to visit five cities instead of the earlier three was operationalised when Pakistan's interior minister Rehman Malik visited New Delhi on December 14-16, 2012.

No new date has been fixed for operationalisation of the visa on arrival facility to the Pakistani senior citizens.

"We will take a decision at an appropriate time," government sources said.

The objections raised by some agencies include whether visiting senior citizens were required to have a sponsor in India before granting them visa on arrival.

The names of the gunman and his three victims were being withheld until the coroner could confirm their identities and notify next of kin, authorities said. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The episode kept residents in much of the surrounding community awake overnight, as police notified neighbors of an emergency situation and evacuated several adjacent blocks.

One neighbor, Sunil Pawar, 59, said he received a reverse 911 call advising him to stay inside and away from windows before police later showed up to ring doorbells and escort residents of the townhouse development to safety. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

Pawar said he opted to stay put, later hearing gunshots, followed by the voices of police calling to the gunman though a bullhorn, saying, "Sonny, we want to talk to you, pick up the phone, Sonny." all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

Another neighbor, Michael Ignace, 46, said he had previously spoken with the man suspected of the shooting, and "he seemed like a reasonable guy, and we talked about motorcycles." all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The standoff and shooting unfolded just a few miles south of the Aurora movie theater where 12 people were killed and 58 others wounded when a lone gunman opened fire there in July during a midnight showing of the Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

The suspect in that rampage, former college student James Holmes, is due back in court on Monday for a hearing in which prosecutors will seek to convince a judge they have sufficient evidence to put him on trial. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The Colorado movie theater killings had ranked as deadliest mass shooting in the United States last year until a Dec. 14 massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman shot 20 school children and six adults to death before taking his own life. NEW DELHI: Matters are getting murkier in the military. There was high drama at the official residence of former Army chief General (retired) V K Singh on Saturday afternoon after his family and personal staff detained a major, accusing him of surreptitiously trying to plant a ``bug'' in the house. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

A red-faced Army headquarters was quick to flatly deny any such snooping attempt, holding that the major and two jawans had simply gone to the house to change the military telephone exchange lines and withdraw the two operators manning them. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The incident gained political overtones as Gen Singh has continued his running battle with the UPA government when he was in service by joining Anna Hazare and being part of demonstrations organised by the Gandhian activist's group. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The army put down the controversy to a miscommunication. ``Resources deployed with Gen Singh are being pruned down after the government's withdrawal of his Z-plus security cover. There was just some miscommunication and misunderstanding. We have apologized to Gen Singh's family for that,'' said a senior officer. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

But it played out like ``a spy versus spy'' episode. Gen V K Singh, who now fears he is ``being spied upon'', himself has been in the eye of a storm over allegations that a secretive military intelligence unit during his tenure as Army chief had illegally used off-the-air interceptors for clandestinely tapping phones of important people in New Delhi. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The drama at the 20 Mandir Marg bungalow, which is allocated to Army chiefs on retirement for six to 12 months , began when Major R Vikram of the 1 Army HQs Signals Unit -- in uniform but later curiously seen without a name-plate -- entered its premises at about 11.45 am. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

``I was not in town, but received information regarding this development that an Army team, consisting of Signals personnel, entered my house in Delhi Cantonment. They said they had orders from the top hierarchy of the Army,'' said Gen V K Singh, who is currently travelling in Gujarat.

His elder daughter Mrinalani apparently let Major Vikram inside the house. But when her mother Bharti Singh reached the house soon after, she strongly objected to the Signals' team presence there without ``any prior notice''. She then directed that the two gates of the house be locked to ensure nobody could go out. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

Gen Singh's lawyer Vishwajeet Singh, who also subsequently reached the house, said the major was ``found to be fiddling'' with the exchange equipment, removing ``some card'' from the machinery located in a room at the rear of the house. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

``The major could not give any reasonable explanation for what he was doing...he had no document/letter authorising him to remove the exchange. It could be anything...he could have come to plant a bug. Recently, they withdrew Gen Singh's security and now this...it could be something big,'' he said. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The former Army chief's family also summoned television channels to witness the unfolding drama. With images being beamed ``live'', the Army HQs promptly swung into action. Delhi Area general-officer-commanding Lt-Gen Subroto Mitra entered the house just after 4 pm to then have a 90-minute ``negotiation'' with Bharti Singh before being allowed to escort the major out. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

The Army admitted it had erred in not giving ``prior notice'' for changing the telephone exchange and withdrawing the two operators manning it. ``The Signals team was mandated to do the job. But there was some misunderstanding and miscommunication. We regret that. The matter was amicably resolved by intervention of the Delhi Area GoC. The exchange will be removed later, this time after prior intimation,'' said an officer. all prize bond results, prize bond formula, prize bond

AT the recent South Asia Women’s Entrepreneurship Symposium in Dhaka, 120 women participants from 11 countries came together to create cross-border linkages between women entrepreneurs and leaders in South Asia.
After two days of deliberations on the challenges and opportunities for women entrepreneurs in governance, technology and trade, delegates from different countries presented their respective country strategies. The Pakistan Country Strategy took cognisance of the circumstances in Pakistan hindering the development of entrepreneurship in general and women’s development in particular.
Current population estimates place two-thirds of the population of Pakistan under the age of 30. There are four million entrants into the job market every year with increasingly limited employment options Prize Bond Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading.
Entrepreneurship needs to be given a fresh impetus if our country is to provide a means of livelihood to the millions seeking jobs in the coming years. The alternative is obvious. We will be faced with a tidal wave of the relatively uneducated, unemployed youth with all the trappings of deep-seated social discontent.
Due to the persistent poor law and order situation, weak governance, corruption, the unavailability of seed capital and lack of encouragement from society, the rate of formal business start-ups in Pakistan is the lowest in the region.
The environment is no more conducive for the female population which despite a 51 per cent representation in the demographic data has a mere three per cent representation in the formal economy. The recent Global Gender Gap Report of the World Economic Forum ranked Pakistan 132 out of 134 countries Prize Bond Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading.
For a strategy to be effective, it has to be rooted in pragmatism. No one panacea can cure the myriad issues that plague women’s development in Pakistan.
Our target group may have to be limited to the relatively educated women in Pakistan, who with the right enabling environment, would be able to move themselves and their families beyond their current income tiers.
Providing basic education has to be the goal of a much more comprehensive national strategy, and perhaps one that can be positively impacted by the right demonstration effect with our limited target group.
With this basic assumption in mind, the following goals need to be achieved in any strategy targeting women entrepreneurs in Pakistan Prize Bond Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading.
Encourage women’s participation in non-traditional sectors: It is important to give women an opportunity to break out of their comfort zones and be better equipped to meet the emerging business demands. The focus on relevant subjects at secondary school and college along with career counselling can help to refocus the girls’ attention on subjects hitherto preserved for the male domain.
Showcasing the few role models of successful women entrepreneurs who have made it against the odds in running manufacturing, construction or logistics firms will help to attune their minds to the possibilities that exist or that they can create for themselves.
Risk mitigation funds with incubation centres for early phase start-ups will undoubtedly help to reduce the fear of failure so endemic in our society. Franchise opportunities for small local businesses will provide relatively easy market access to women choosing to re-enter the job markets after an early marriage.
Procurement quotas reserved for women-run enterprises by the larger corporations will give them a chance to compete in a male-dominated marketplace. These are just some of the many possibilities that exist to encourage women’s participation in a much wider economic space Prize Bond Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading.
Combat corruption: A number of international studies have pointed to the positive impact of women in the workplace, not just in terms of enhanced efficiency but also in inculcating ethical practices. We need to build on this by encouraging all women-run business (and indeed all others) to sign a pledge to say ‘no’ to corruption. All educational institutions should be encouraged to introduce a course on ethics as part of their mandatory curriculum. A volunteer group of women lawyers can create a helpline to provide guidance and support to women entrepreneurs for the many cases of extortion and bribery that have become commonplace in our business environment. An active media campaign is needed to bring awareness about the rampant plague of corruption in the country.
Increase regional trade: South Asia has the lowest regional trade in the world. While India-Pakistan trade will hopefully get a boost from the recent rapprochement between the two countries, we need to ensure that our future relationship is grounded in solid business dynamics.
The momentum created by the symposium in Dhaka needs to be maintained by a follow-up symposium, hosted in Pakistan in 2014. A trade exhibition organised on the fringes of this symposium will give a chance to women entrepreneurs from the region to showcase their products Prize Bond Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading.
Regional chambers could be approached to arrange business-to-business exchanges and facilitate e-trade by creating a uniform payment system across borders. Finally cross-border information on the ‘ease of doing business’ can be compiled in collaboration with various chambers and trade bodies.
Create an enabling environment: The wish list presented above cannot be possible without some basic enablers in place. Of this perhaps the most important is the access to finance.
There is a need to encourage financial institutions to create loan mechanisms that mitigate risk without the need for onerous collateral. There is also a need to train bankers to change their mindset towards cash flow analysis and appreciate the business case for funding female entrepreneurs Prize Bond Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading.
Changing mindsets can be a long and laborious process, but can be expedited by making women part of the decision-making process. Pakistan needs to follow the global drive to recruit more women at the board level.
Prioritisation of key objectives is critical to effective implementation. Commonality of purpose will spur the change but only active engagement with all stakeholders will ensure sustainability Prize Bond Watch Free Movies Online Without Downloading.

Pakistani Wedding Dresses | Girls Feet

I watched in awe as a woman walked in wearing a long black kameez, with intricate white floral pattern along the neckline, running all the way down her kameez and finishing off in neat tassels. Then another walked in behind her in a white kurta with self-colored geometric patterns and the prettiest black and white lace I had ever seen, consciously placed along the edge of her long kurta, finely matched with a printed churidaar giving her attire a perfect finish. While trying to digest this, a young girl of about 15 years of age, walked in next wearing a rusty brown kameez with a bold slant cut at the bottom. She had a huge black screen-printed motive in front that was disturbingly screaming for attention and matched perfectly with her black tights.
If you think this is a description of a fashion show, then you won’t be completely wrong. The only difference is all these women dressed in black and white are those coming to a majlis gathering in covered heads – and yes, for anyone who’s observant; this does distract you from listening to the sermon.
I belong to the Shia community myself and have been brought up in a conservative family with strong religious beliefs. My purpose is not to mock Muharram but to bring to your realisation that the fashion around us is changing so drastically that people often forget the purpose and significance of these days in all their wardrobe preparations. A color that was initially worn during the month of Muharram for the purpose of mourning the martyrdom of the Shia Imam, HussainIbn Ali, has now become an element of fashion.
People start ordering black clothes prior to the month in order to keep their wardrobes ready. In fact, in order to keep up with the demand for the colour, many fashion outlets showcase an entire ‘Muharram collection’ of black clothes close to the start of the month. Shops and entire markets are filled with black and white prints with big attractive floral designs and intricate patterns. Fashion designers claim that they sometimes have to stop taking orders because they are overloaded with orders for Muharram clothes.
I may sound a bit chauvinistic but sadly this is real. Most of them may not be turning this into a fashion fiesta on purpose and making clothes particularly for Muharram may even be a necessity for many, as they don’t normally wear black on regular days. However, special preparation of clothes for Muharram, in the same manner you would do for Eid or any other festive occasion, is disconcerting.
The concept of ‘azadari’ in Muharram was started by the family of the Prophet after the death of his grandson HussainIbn Ali at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. They did not ‘dress-up’ when they began mourning for the fallen Pakistani Wedding Dresses.
Our concept of wearing black is not any different to Christians wearing black on funerals or the Hindus wearing white. Even though they wear plain black and white on funerals of regular people, I think it is the best way to symbolise mourning. Why can’t we keep it as simple as them? Why can’t we respectfully mourn the leaders of our religion in simplicity? Why does it have to become extravagant to the point of becoming fashionable?
I’ve even attended a majlis where dinner is lavishly catered and the menu consists of everything from finger-licking biryani and qorma to the much-loved warm gulab jamuns served with vanilla ice cream Beautiful Girls Wallpapers.
With all due respect, it felt nothing less than a wedding in black.
Whatever happened to the simple menu of daal chawal that was once a trademark at all majlises and even funerals?
People have every right to serve food and conduct their gatherings at a large scale but turning these gatherings into glamorous feasts defeats the purpose of mourning and the significance of the month. It is disappointing to see how people unintentionally take away the essence of mourning and turn it into a celebration-like event.
I say unintentionally because I am aware that people make a lot of effort to be presentable for such gatherings and also make it comfortable for those they invite over for the sermons they hold in their houses. There is no reason to doubt their faith but the fact that they get carried away in the process is quite evident Girls Feet.
Amongst all this, I remember an old lady who lived in our neighborhood. Being from outside the community, the way she respected Muharram was worthy of praise. Always dressed in crisp plain white shalwar kameez, she came to any neighborhood majlis she was invited to and paid her respects pakistani wedding dresses.
There are still many people like her as well. It doesn’t matter what faith you follow, the beauty lies in the simplicity of your personality and how to present yourself. That is what reflects and leaves an impression – not becoming part of the trend.

KABUL: Pakistan will consider freeing former Afghan Taliban second-in-command, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, if current releases of lower level members help to advance peace efforts, officials from both countries told Reuters on Thursday.

“After releasing 13 Taliban, Pakistan promised to free Mullah Baradar if these releases prove effective in peace negotiations,” said a senior Afghan official close to talks between Islamabad and Kabul.

Afghanistan has been pushing Pakistan to release Afghan Taliban captives who could provide leverage in any peace talks.

Pakistan has released mid-level Taliban prisoners over the last two days.

But Pakistan is under growing pressure to free senior Taliban figures like Baradar, as most Nato combat troops pull out by the end of 2014.

Afghan officials believe he may command enough respect to persuade the Taliban to engage in talks with the Kabul government.

Asked if Baradar would also be freed, a senior Pakistani foreign ministry official said that could happen if the release of the mid-level Taliban figures “produced results”.

GAZA CITY: Militants defied a major Israeli bombing campaign across Gaza on Thursday, firing off volleys of rockets which killed three Israelis and sparked panic in Tel Aviv.

As Palestinian deaths from relentless air strikes on Gaza mounted, Defence Minister Ehud Barak gave the go-ahead for 30,000 reservists to be called up and the military said it was “in the process of expanding the campaign.”

Egypt, meanwhile, announced that Prime Minister Hisham Qandil would visit Gaza on Friday to express his country’s solidarity with the Hamas-ruled strip, as Washington urged Cairo to use its influence to try to halt the violence.

But Gaza’s ruling Hamas movement remained defiant, ruling out any talk of a truce even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned he was ready to “significantly expand” the campaign against the territory.

“In the past 24 hours, Israel has made it clear that it will not tolerate rocket and missile attacks on its civilians. I hope that Hamas and the other terror organisations in Gaza got the message,” he said, as Gaza medics reported 15 Palestinians killed in two days of air raids.

“If not, Israel is prepared to take whatever action is necessary to defend our people.”

Soon after he spoke, a rocket hit the sea just south of Tel Aviv, an AFP correspondent at the scene said, the farthest that a rocket from Gaza had ever landed inside Israel.

The attack sparked panic in Tel Aviv, with television images showing people lying on the ground outside the defence ministry, their hands over their heads as sirens wailed.

In a televised news conference shortly after the sirens sounded, the military’s official spokesman said that no rocket had “hit the ground.”Israeli news networks said it was the first time rockets had been fired at the city since the 1991 Gulf War, when it was hit by Iraqi Scud missiles.

The armed wing of the radical Islamic Jihad quickly claimed it had fired an Iranian-made Fajr 5 rocket at the sprawling coastal city in central Israel.

The army’s official spokesman warned that the military was expanding its campaign.

“The defence minister approved a few minutes ago, based on the army’s request, the recruitment of another 30,000 soldiers. We will determine how many of them will be called in,” Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai told Channel 2 television.

“All options are on the table.” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri insisted the Islamist movement was not interested by talk of a truce.

“We consider talk of a truce at this time an attempt to provide more cover for the continuation of the escalation,” he told a news conference.

Israel’s biggest military campaign against Gaza in nearly four years began on Wednesday with the targeted killing of top Hamas commander Ahmed Jaabari, triggering a major flare-up in and around the tiny enclave which is home to 1.6 million Palestinians.

The violence, which erupted as Israel heads towards a January general election, sparked expressions of deep concern internationally and prompted an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

Since the start of Operation Pillar of Defence, the military said it had carried out more than 150 air strikes as armed groups fired more than 200 rockets at southern Israel.

So far, 15 people have been killed in Gaza, among them seven militants and three children, a woman and two elderly men, and 150 people have been injured in scores of Israeli strikes, medics and health ministry officials said.

And in the southern Israeli town of Kiryat Malachi, police said two men and a woman were killed when a rocket hit their home, and that another 19 people had been injured in various areas, among them three soldiers.

The Israeli operation prompted an outpouring of anger across the Arab and Muslim world, with Tehran accusing the Jewish state of “organised terrorism” and Qatar’s premier saying the strikes “must not pass unpunished.”

Egypt’s Islamist administration, which has close ties with Hamas, immediately recalled its ambassador in protest, but in a surprise development, announced that Qandil would would visit Gaza with a number of ministers on Friday.

US deputy State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had spoken with her Egyptian counterpart.

“We ask Egypt to use its influence in the region to help de-escalate the situation,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: Central leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Mian Raza Rabbani on Thursday said that efforts were made to create conflict between different institutions, but due to effective conciliatory policies of the government these did not work.

Rabbani also said the Balochistan issue has become very serious and requires crucial decisions.

The PPP senator was taking part on a motion in the Senate regarding law and order situation in the country with particular reference to target killings and sectarian violence in Balochistan, Karachi and Gilgit-Baltistan.

He said the issue of missing persons in Balochistan is becoming a main hurdle in the way of solving the issue.

Rabbani presented an eight points before the house to address the Karachi issue. He said these include creating consensus with the participation of all stakeholders against groups or individuals involved in terrorism.

He suggested establishing committees of stakeholders regarding law and order at the provincial assembly level, increasing coordination between inter and intra-provincial intelligence agencies, denying release of perpetrators of terrorism from police stations. He also proposed stopping of postings of SHOs on recommendations, provision of cell phone tracking facility to law enforcing agencies in Sindh, making the role of CPLC active and installation and repair of CCTV cameras at sensitive locations.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, taking part in the discussion, said there have been persistent attacks from the media and the opposition that the government is not taking enough steps, which was a wrong perception.

He requested for an in-camera briefing to inform the senators of the arrests and progress made so far in order to curb the terrorism.

Malik said Karachi is a multi-ethnic city and it is not the first time that the city is being faced with a wave of violence.

Lahore: A man shot at a website and then turned the gun on his avatar that he was using on the site’s discussion forum.

Police said the man, 26-year-old, Arif Hamid, is a resident of DHA Lahore who was incensed by the website, accusing it of running content that was against his faith. The man was arrested while his avatar’s body was sent for post-mortem.

The website, ‘Let Us Body-Build Pakistan,’ was unhurt, but the laptop that the man was using was badly mutilated.

However, PML-N leader and Chief Minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, promised to gift a free laptop to the man. The gesture is a part of his party’s on-going scheme to hand out laptops to angry young men with a penchant to create world records for singing the Pakistani national anthem while doing a thousand cartwheels in less than a minute. This is something that Sharif believes will be beneficial to the country’s struggling economy.

After Arif Hamid was arrested and taken to a police station, he was allowed to speak to a group of reporters. Talking to them while holding a broken computer mouse in his hand, Hamid said: ‘Oh these fools Jew peoples insult holy men and child of true faith on Friday after Friday sometimes Saturday morning playing with emotion of true faithfuls liberal fascist US servants Kill Bill PTI Tsunami change bringing coming Zindabad …!’

After hearing this, Shahbaz Sharif cancelled his order of giving the man the free laptop and ordered the Punjab police to start criminal proceedings against him. He added that if the need arises, the man should be hanged from a lamppost.

‘Imran Khan’s PTI is the country’s biggest terrorist organisation and most corrupt party,’ Sharif told media personnel while watching hundreds of young Pakistanis create a world record by making the world’s biggest hairpiece that will be placed on the head of Mr. Sharif’s 70-ft statue at his Raiwind home.

Meanwhile, the owner of the website, Mr. Nick Anonymous, a Pakistani Buddhist living in Rangoon, Burma, blamed anti-Buddhist journalists and outfits for using Arif Hameed as a proxy to proximate promiscuous patriotic pomposity against Pakistani Buddhists.

Talking to this reporter from Rangoon, Mr. Nick Anonymous (his real name) said: ‘Our site might have been shot at, but our spirit to expose anti-Buddhist terrorism of the proximate promiscuous pompous patriot proxies will continue.’

On the other hand, while responding to Shahbaz Sharif’s statement, PTI chief, Imran Khan, commented that Arif Hamid’s avatar might be gone, but there is a tsunami of avatars and nicks still out there ready to change the fate and face of Pakistan.

‘They are all over,’ Mr. Khan’s statement said. ‘They are called trolls and all kinds of obnoxious and abusive things by corrupt politicians and liberal scum, but they’ve shown great restrain by not stooping down to the level of their accusers.’

Charged and inspired by Khan’s statement, his supporters responded by making #DeathToSlimyLiberalPigs trend heavily on Twitter.

Till the filing of this report, Arif Hamid had been refused bail but his avatar was buried on the internet by PTI supporters on CelebrityGraves.Com between the virtual graves of American rock star, Jim Morrison, and the grave of an innocent Islamist militant killed in an American drone attack.

Expressing his satisfaction, Arif Hamid thanked his supporters and tweeted (from behind bars): ‘Oh you thank you Muslim ummah Jim Bhai hates Jew drones avatar rest in piece with Muslim mujahid tsunami coming DeathToSlimyLiberalPigs …’

Pakistan to launch its own video-content site to counter YouTube

Islamabad: On Tuesday November 13, Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, announced the launch of Pakistan’s own video-content website.

At a launch ceremony held at a local hotel in Islamabad, and also attended by the chief of Jamat-i-Islami (JI) Munwar Hassan, head of the Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI), Maullana Fazalur Rehman, and the youth wings of Imran Khan’s PTI and PML-N, Rehman told the gathering that the site was launched to counter the anti-Muslim hate content on YouTube and against those who were uploading such content.

Rehman said the Pakistani site is going to be called YouB***tards and will be squarely used to counter those who were bent upon insulting Muslims on YouTube.

Much of the funding for the project has come from Pakistani workers living in oil-rich Arab countries, but Rehman informed reporters that funding for the project was also raised by all those brave Pakistanis who demolished cinemas, shops and banks and looted ATM machines during the recent protests against an anti-Islam film on YouTube.

‘Much of the looted ATM money and chairs from Bambino and Nishat cinemas were donated to the project,’ Rehman happily added.

‘We politicians may differ on various trivial issues like terrorism, economy and crime, but here we are all on the same page,’ he said.

He further added that he had even invited some Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) leaders to the launch ceremony but they wanted to give YouB***tards an explosive start by coming to the launch in a truck rigged with explosives and with men wrapped in dynamite. He said some firecrackers and flag burnings would have sufficed.

Rehman also screened the first video to be uploaded on YouB***tards. It shows JI and JUI supporters making a bonfire of books written by such atheists as Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Bertrand Russell, Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, Christopher Hitchens and SpongeBob SquarePants.

When asked why other leaders from his party, the PPP, weren’t present at the ceremony, Rehman said most of them were at the premier of the new James Bond film, Sky Fall. ‘But they are all here in spirit,’ he explained.

He then read President Zardari’s message written specially for the occasion: ‘Dear democratic, liberal and moderate Pakistanis, YouB***tards khapey, khapey, khapey!’

YouB***tards will go online from 1 January, 2013 and will be operated from a specially built bunker in Islamabad by two of Pakistan’s most brilliant intellectuals, Zaid Rambo Hamid and Oreo Maqbool Biscuit.

TV anchor loses mind trying to figure out Karachi violence

Karachi: Famous TV anchor and analyst, Yaqoob Bajwa, is said to have had a nervous breakdown live on TV while trying to explain the recent conflict and worsening law and order situation in Karachi.

On his show, ‘Fire Off’, Yaqoob was discussing the situation of Karachi with some members of the PPP, MQM and ANP. But when he also called in (via telephone) leaders of Sunni Tehreek (ST), Sipah Sahaba (SSP), JI, Peoples Aman Commity (PAC) and the maker’s of Karachi’s famous ‘Slims Chilli Chips’, he began to pull out his hair and shout obscenities at the guests.

Most people thought he was doing this just to boost the ratings of his show, until his eyes went wild, his hair stood up, his moustache dropped and he began to talk to himself.

The following are some of the things the anchor was heard saying : ‘So, MQM is up against ANP but both are against the Taliban, as well as against the ST that is against the Taliban who are supporting SSP that is against MQM, ANP and ST but okay with JI and PAC that is associated with the PPP that is in a coalition with MQM and ANP that is against Taliban, SSP and ST that are against Shias who are against SSP and ST and sometimes Haqiqi and ANP and all of these have armed wings that are fighting each another and also among themselves and against the police and the Rangers and the ISI up against MQM that is up against ANP but both are against the Taliban as well as against the ST that is against the Taliban who are supporting SSP that is against MQM, ANP and ST but okay with JI and PAC that is associated with the PPP that is in a coalition with MQM and ANP that is against the Taliban, SSP and ST that are against Shias who are against SSP and ST … and then there is the case of Slims Chilli Chips, what the hell are Slims Chilli Chips doing here, can anybody tell me, anyone, anybody, please tell me, please, please, PLEASE …?’

The show that was being telecasted live was suddenly taken off the air when Yaqoob, 44, began to tear off his clothes and started to jiggle his chest and stomach.

Yaqoob Bajwa minutes before he was taken off the air.

Before becoming a popular TV anchor, Yaqoob was a wrestler in the Punjab city of Sahiwal. Six years ago he was given the job of a TV anchor by a news channel after he completed a 4-hour-training course in shouting for the heck of it by TV anchor, Jasmine Namazoor, and a 2-hour-training by another famous TV anchor, Kamran Cylinder Khan, in blurting out an average of 7,200 words per minute!

Most of Yaqoob’s shows were about diabolic conspiracies behind earthquakes, hurricanes and mosquito infestations, and about jotting down dates and days when he predicted the government would fall.

But recently he was asked by his TV channel to do a show on Karachi, in spite of the fact that the last time Yaqoob visited Karachi was 40 years ago as a young boy who came to Karachi with his parents to attend his maternal uncle’s valima.

The journalistic community has protested against the treatment fretted out to Yaqoob by his employers and termed it as a conspiracy by those who were against journalists willing to openly report about the events in Karachi.

Journalist-preacher-philosopher-whiner, Sangsar Abbasi, criticised Yaqoob’s employers, saying that they had used a non-Sharia complaint way to dismiss an employee: ‘This action will certainly arouse the wrath of God,’ Sangsar said in all seriousness. After watching the tragic footage of Yaqoob jiggling his chest, Sangsar warned that soon Karachi will be hit by a Sandy-like hurricane called Hurricane Booby.

After getting some treatment at a local hospital, Yaqoob is reported to have gone back to his hometown and was not available on his phone – even though he did leave a tweet on his Twitter account: ‘Thanks for ur concern, dear fans and fraands. But mark my words: Root cause of all violence in Karachi lies in the questionable quantities of the salt in Slims Chilli Chips.’

Sweeper becomes millionaire by getting paid by thousands of smokers to let them smoke in the bathroom of a non-smoking airport

Karachi: Rajab Manan, a sweeper at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, is reported to have become a millionaire by getting paid by thousands of smokers in the bathrooms of the non-smoking airport.

Rajab at the reception held in his honour.

This was proudly announced by Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, at a reception hosted to honour Rajab’s entrepreneurial skills.

Though this government has been lax and largely incompetent in addressing issues like terrorism, unemployment, illiteracy, crime, overpopulation, sectarianism and social and political instability, it has been extra vigilant and persistent in imposing a blanket ban on smoking in all of the country’s airports.

Rehman proudly reminded the media that Pakistani airports are the only airports in the world that do not have any designated smoking areas at all.

When a reporter pointed out that this was actually promoting corruption in which smokers were paying bribes to sweepers and sweepers accepting them, Malik accused the reporter of being an agent of foreign tobacco companies.

‘Why are you looking at the negative side?’ He asked the reporter. ‘Look what economic opportunities this ban has created for poor people like Rajab.’

Malik then invited Rajab to come up on stage and relate his rags-to-riches story in his own words.

‘Fusst of all, I want to thank this great poor-friendly government and its Ministers for creating opportunities for poor men like me to become rich men like them,’ Rajab said (in Urdu).

Guests at the reception.

He continued: ‘Had this smoking ban not been imposed so rigorously by this great government, people like me would have remained desperate and poor and cleaning other peoples stuff in airport bathrooms.’

He said that he was against smoking and he didn’t smoke, but he does enjoy to show-off the cigars he just bought after watching another rich man Sheikh Rashid (aka Sheeda Tully) on TV: ‘Although Tully Saab is not part of this great and glorious anti-smoking government, I like the way he smokes his cigar. Makes him look very rich. Sort of like me.’

Rajab said that he has advised the government to use his example to make cigarette manufacturers of Pakistan to slightly alter the health warnings on their packs. He informed the media that the government has in fact agreed to heed his advice.

According to Pakistan’s health ministry, from now on the following label will begin to appear on Pakistani cigarette packs: ‘WARNING: Smoking is injurious to health and can create numerous health-related complications; but if you are a sweeper at a Pakistani airport, letting others smoke can actually make you very rich, very quickly – Ministry of Health … and Rajab.’

But not everyone at the reception was happy about Rajab’s good fortune. A young man in his 20s angrily stood up and interrupted Rajab’s speech by shouting: ‘‘Oh Rajab fool Jew insult proud Pakistani men and child of true faith on Friday after Friday in airport latrine sometimes smoking day after day morning, evening night playing with emotion of true Pakistani pride bride liberal fascist US servants Kill Bill PTI Tsunami change bringing coming Zindabad DeathToSlimySmokingPigs …!’

It seems that the serious inconvenience caused by the protector of the people and ace terror fighter, interior minister Mr. Rehman Malik, who has made it a habit to suspend cell phone services at the drop of a hat, may come to an end soon by way of a new mobile courier company called “Bhangra” that was launched today in Karachi.

The launch was held at the Quetta Darbar Dervish Hotel in Gizri Bazar of Defence Phase 4.  The parent company of Bhangra is a fully Pakistan based conglomerate the Dhaba Group of Companies.

Announcing the launch, Mr. M.A. Doodh Patti Wala, CEO, CFO and Chairman of the board, emphasised that the new product will be the first fully indigenous mobile courier system. “The system will be using technology that we have had in the sub-continent for hundreds of years: Pigeons!”

Taking a shot at a competitor that uses a foreign music form as their trademark, he declared, “Our system truly apna hey, jassey Bhangra apna hey!” Mr. Doodh Patti Wala thanked the terrorists and Mr. Rehman Malik for providing the inspiration for Bhangra. “You see, the current mobile systems are closed down on all important occasions causing immense problems to the public. This is the where Bhangra comes in.  Messages will be relayed via trained pigeons (kabooters).  Customer will be able to send a message by walking into any dhaba displaying the following sign. A team of courier pigeons will be available at all participating dhabas.”

The CEO also explained that very attractive special packages will be offered. For example the “Romance Package” will allow 10 messages to the same recipient for the price of five messages. The package will include a pre-written romantic message that the customer can pick out from a catalogue. For a small additional charge, the pigeon will drop flower petals on the recipient.

Mr. Doodh Patti Wala said that his projections indicate that given the deteriorating security situation in the country the current mobile systems will soon be shut at least 25 per cent of the time. Encouraging investors to buy the stocks in the new company, Mr. D.P. Walla said, “Our company is in a win-win situation: more violence, more sales!” Answering a question on the environmental problem due to pigeon dropping, Mr. Wala stated that special re-usable nappies are being designed in collaboration with the world-renowned nappy makers, Pooper and Gamble to contain the droppings.

The General Manager marketing Mr. S. A. Kabooter announced that Bhangra will be the official sponsor of the National Kabbadi Championship and the sponsored drink will be lassi. Replying to a query on the recruitment and training of the pigeons, Mr. Kabooter replied that the couriers have already been hired from the sufi saint mazars where thousands of pigeon come everyday to eat the grain showered by the devotees. For training, the pigeons are being taught to read Google maps. The beak of the pigeon is placed first on the message pickup point on the Google map and then at the delivery point. This will allow the pigeon to look at the route to get to the destination.

A defense establishment expert also spoke on the occasion, and highlighted the usefulness of the technology for national security. “Essentially, this is stealth technology. The pigeon carrying a secret message will be impossible to track since there are thousands of pigeons flying around in the air space.  And if, by chance, a courier is shot down it is no great loss since pigeons breed, well, like pigeons!”

The launch came to an end with a spirited Bhangra performance by a team of pigeons over a cup of hot doodh patti and sweet jalebi. The only low point to an otherwise successful launch was that the pigeon droppings of the performing artists could not be contained by the locally manufactured nappies and caused some unpleasantness.  Mr. D.P. Walla himself had a large white blob on his head that he cheerfully wiped off with his jacket sleeve, remarking, “All for a good cause!”

Stocks for Bhangra (KSE stock code “Bhang”) closed at Rs. 100 after being launched at Rs. 10.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said Thursday that the Supreme Court reserved the judicial authority to take notice of any issue, DawnNews reported.

Addressing a full court session, Chief Justice Iftikhar said no institution in the country had the right to interfere in another institution’s domain. He said the judiciary was a role model for other state institutions.

The chief justice added that no institution, on its own, could establish good governance in the country.

He showed satisfaction over the pace with which cases were being concluded by the courts. He said people’s faith in the judiciary has been restored and people were consulting to the courts more than ever before.

He said the judges’ hard work was leading to better results for the country.

Chief Justice Iftikhar said he had sent recommendations to the federation to sort out the issue of shortage of judges in the country.

“I have not received any response although six months have passed since making the request,” he added.

The chief justice said he was receiving petitions from all over the country regarding human rights violations.

The hunting season has arrived in the tourist-deprived country. When migratory birds start arriving, the princes of the Arab world come to their favourite hunting spot, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, to fulfill their passion for hunting. We always imagine a young, charming personality when we think of a prince. But it is best if we don’t speak of these princes. They are as old as 70 years, biding their time until the king dies. Just like our generals remain generals unless they become presidents or chief executives.

Our country has countless hunting spots: deserts, forests, wildernesses, as well as large cities. But when seasons change, the winds become chilly and show signs of approaching winter, the migratory birds turn southwards. Then herds of innocent birds begin landing here while the sheikhs also begin to arrive with their entire caravans. Then the roads are full of the sheikhs’ caravans instead of those of the military.

This time we were surrounded by unseasonal rains and floods while we hear about the famine in Thar. The seasons are changing. No one knows when spring or autumn arrive anymore. But there is one season that stays the same all year round in our country: the hunting season. Some people spend the entire year hunting and arranging for others to hunt. Many are dependent on it for their contacts and even their futures. From the uniformed ones to the non-uniformed ones, all are guests at the hunting camps of the ever hospitable hosts. Be it Ayub, Yahya, Zia or Musharraf, all of them have been their guests and adorning one’s guest with an ajrak and a topi has always been a tradition.

Once the migratory birds arrive, the Arab princes leave their deserts to come and set camp on our deserts. By the way, our country prohibits hunting like it prohibits so many other things, but you know well the definition of prohibition used here. So, the Arab princes come here as the guests of the Foreign Ministry, while other hunting enthusiasts have to go to the wildlife department. Areas have been allotted across the country according to the princes’ respective temperaments and likings. God forbid if the Saudi prince’s area is given to the prince from Gulf, not only will the free oil go but there will be the princes’ resentment to endure. They already know how to keep leaders (whether in or out of the government) happy.

These migratory birds not only migrate to Pakistan but also to Afghanistan and Iran. But after 1970, when Iran wore the turban and Afghanistan was turned into a battlefield, our country became the only secure, cheap and profitable alternative for Arab princes. It is the country whose leaders can only be easily pleased by presents. Even if what the princes say in Arabic isn’t particularly “holy”, the faith of us poor believers is always enlivened when we hear the language.

The wilderness, deserts and forests are all being decorated anew. If you wish to see a carnival in the jungle, this is your chance! You will see these hunting enthusiasts, the sheikhs with their huge armies, hunting experts and security guards. I had the opportunity to visit such a camp in Thar once where I was lucky enough to meet a sharpshooting expert. Nowadays, most sharpshooters are normally found in Karachi but the one I met was part of Sheikh Sahab’s entourage and hailed from Kerala – jobs can take us to places that are so different from each other. Now, most sheikhs have erected palaces in their favourite hunting spots. They have hired locals for their expertise in other kinds of arrangements too. Whatever is asked for is provided.

Incidentally, the coming of the hunting season before the election season is a good omen for those who aim to enjoy the luxuries of power without getting any votes. They have gained success in the past on the pretext of hunting. But this time, it seems like the elections will be held on time which is why the permits for hunting are being handed out. Those who hunt without permits are watching the judiciary and the uniforms and waiting, just in case there is some ray of hope somewhere.

The birds are the rays of hope; unfortunately they are also the targets. Similarly, the entire world is in a state of migration without seasons being an excuse. The borders are drawn and redrawn not only on land but also in people’s hearts and minds. These migratory birds cannot be stopped by man-made borders. Neither do they think about the Arab princes who lie in wait for them along with their expert sharpshooters to shoot them down when they land. Yet, they still always come and get gunned down.

These “lovers” of the houbara bustard have already extinguished the species from their countries. The rest of the world has prohibited hunting them down, we too have signed a treaty; a treaty we are not bound to, like the many others. The Arabs are our friends who have always helped us in times of trouble, the least we can do for them is break the law. Such is the nature of our friendship. Whoever is in power or out of it remains incomplete without the Arabs’ “hand of compassion” over him.

Look at our Mian Sahab. He returned as a sheikh after 8-10 years. The only thing he doesn’t do is hunt but still possesses the same grandiloquence as an Arab prince. On one hand, there are floods occurring in Sindh due to unseasonal rains, whereas Mian Sahab is responsible for the other flood. Just think, PML-N’s advertisements are being published with “Jeay Sindh, Sada Jeay!”. I could hardly believe my eyes. Sindh has lived and will continue to live. But what has Mian Sahab gotten himself involved in? Here, everyone has left their principles and ideologies in the mud and are pledging allegiance to PML-F’s Pir Sahab, saying that a new star is going to rise in Sindh. Seems more like a new pir is to be brought in competition against the urban one.

Hunting spots across Pakistan have either become too small or too few to cater to the hunters’ needs. So now they have moved into Pakistan’s cities to satiate this need. They seem intent on turning our cities into new hunting grounds. The city whose streets used to be washed with water every evening before Pakistan was created is now being bathed in blood instead. This hunting season will last three months and I hope to God it really does end in three months. The migratory birds will leave and so will the Arab princes. But we refuse to let go of the hope that after the hunting season, the elections season will also come. One can only wait and wonder if this time, the hunter will become the hunted.

The moral order is out of order in the United States where cheating on a spouse can cost you your job; whereas causing the death of thousands of innocents poses no harm to your career.

The past week saw two senior executives forced to resign in the United States after admitting to their respective infidelities. The head of the CIA, General David Petraeus, abruptly resigned after his affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, was exposed by the FBI. In the not-so-covert battle for control over federal resources between the FBI and the CIA, this was one of the biggest coups staged by one federal agency against the other.

Around the same time in Bethesda, Maryland, in the Washington Metropolitan Area, another affair led to a forced resignation of  Christopher E. Kubasik, who was the then President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Mr. Kubasik, who was in line to become the CEO in the near future, was booted from the company after “an ethics investigation confirmed that he had a close personal relationship with a subordinate employee.”  Having an affair with a subordinate is “inconsistent with our values and standards”, said Robert J. Stevens, chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin, which is one of the world’s largest defense contractor and is responsible for manufacturing several deadly war machines.

Lockheed Martin is literally embedded with the US government’s defense and other key departments. According to William D. Hartung, the company “received $36 billion in government contracts in 2008 alone, more than any company in history.” Realising that the company’s latest reported annual revenue is $47.3 billion, while it received $41.5 billion from the US government during 2011 (see the table below), it appears that Lockheed Martin exists primarily on the US government’s contracts. One still wonders how is Lockheed Martin able to secure such huge contracts from the government year after year.

Ten largest contractors with the US Federal Government

Funds received from the US government in 2011

Lockheed Martin Corporation
$41,537,519,292

The Boeing Company

General Dynamics Corporation

William Hartund in fact sheds some light on the quid pro quo between Lockheed Martin and the US government by revealing that Lockheed Martin spent “$12 million on congressional lobbying and campaign contributions in 2009 alone. Not surprisingly, it’s the top contributor to the incoming House Armed Services Committee chairman, Republican Howard P. “Buck” McKeon of California, giving more than $50,000 in the most recent election cycle. It also tops the list of donors to Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI), the powerful chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.” Under the guise of lobbying, the weapons manufacturer has spent several thousand dollars in getting those legislators elected who may be sympathetic to its core mission and values. Such investments in affecting the electoral outcomes perhaps does not violate Lockheed Martin’s values and standards.

The nexus between the US civil and military establishment is indeed strong. The relationship is even more pronounced when the Republicans control the White House. Notice below how Lockheed Martin’s stock sustained an upward climb between 2001 and 2009 during the Bush presidency. The company’s fortunes reversed when it became apparent in late 2008 that Democrats would control the White House. The profitability of American firms manufacturing the ornaments of war rely on the military adventurism of the US government. In the absence of war, companies like Lockheed Martin would have to engage in less ‘glamorous’ tasks, such as counting people for the Census!

The other villain in the story, General David Petraeus, though is not your typical soldier. He earned a Masters and a Doctorate in International Relations from Princeton University. He was also hailed by the Washington insiders and the Newsweek Magazine as the man who ‘saved’ Iraq. While the Newsweek magazine is too weak to appear in print (as of January 2013), several Washington insiders are still rooting for the General who led the 101st Airborne Division in 2003 and later in 2007 was put in charge of the surge in Iraq.

The surge did not work in Iraq. After decades of wars and sectarian strife, Iraqis got tired of killing and they reorganised along the sectarian lines in cities. With Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds retreated to the safety of their respective ghettos, the killing spree ended in Iraq. However, this did not happen before nearly 120,000 civilians died in the American imposed war on Iraq, which was waged on false pretences. The General also led Nato forces in Afghanistan during 2010-11, where civilian deaths since 2006 have exceeded 12,800.

How is it that the Americans are not outraged by such massive atrocities caused by their civil and military leaders? Why is that women groups in Washington, DC, and elsewhere are flabbergasted after learning about affairs of their leadership, but are not moved by the misery of others caused by the same individuals? With thousands of civilians dead in Iraq and Afghanistan, Americans should ask why these wars were waged in the first place and what have they achieved in the end.

I hope that these extramarital escapades distract the civil and military leadership in the United States from waging wars on others. Monica Lewinsky served the same purpose when Washington, DC, was gridlocked in 1995 because of the tussle between President Clinton and the Republican controlled Congress.  The US could have waged another war to get the House in order, which it didn’t courtesy Ms. Lewinsky.

However, when President Clinton was pushed into a tight corner on August 17, 1998, during his testimony before the Grand Jury about his affair with Ms. Lewinsky, the US establishment indeed resorted to firing missiles, which landed on August 20, 1998, on Al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory in Khartoum, Sudan. The missiles completely destroyed the factory and as a result subsequently caused the deaths of thousands in Sudan because with Al-Shifa gone, they had no alternative source for basic medicines.

While I reserve the ‘moral’ judgement on extramarital affairs, I am all for such rendezvous as long as they keep the American executives distracted and pre-empted from waging wars on others.
